I’m so excited to bring my parent to explore Jakarta at night both to experience modern and authentic side of this city. Before they go home to Solo city the day after tomorrow, I go with them exploring city by MRT train. Of course, I want to show them, too about an authentic dinner that they haven’t experienced before. So we drop at Blok M Station of South Jakarta and shortly walk to Mahakam-Bulungan street intersection to enjoy Gultik.
Gultik is an abbreviated word for Gule Tikungan. Gule literally means curry and tikungan means intersection. Ya, it’s all about beef curry sold in the Mahakam-Bulungan intersection.
Since I came here for the first time around 6 or 7 years ago, I’m always impressed about Gultik. Firstly, it’s because there are a lot of street vendors selling this same menu at the same in the road side. I might say there are around 20+ sellers here. I also heard that this ecosystem has been existing here since 1980s. So, I may say this a legendary culinary Jakarta, too.
Secondly, it’s about the portion of the menu. It’s so mini. It’s really a mini dinner. For a plate of gultik with the price of IDR 10k (around 60-70 cents) we get like five spoons of rice and curry. The good side is so affordable and maybe fits for those who have diet. But for me, one plate is not enough hahaha. I have to order at least one more plate. It’s interestingly recommended for buying another additional Gultik ini another seller(s) to enjoy the moment of exploration and maybe to compare the taste as well.
For the night goers or those who finish their work at night, gultik is most probably interesting for them since it’s located in strategic place which is eqsy to acces and serves from around 4 pm to 3 am.
Furthermore, this basic taste reminds me a bit to tongseng, a kind of traditional curry from my hometown Solo. So, it quite fits to my tongue. The side dishes of various kind of satay like in Solo definitely boosts the temptation to eat, too.
